Here is the custom laptop case that I made for my moms birthday. I used different fabrics from the bargain area of Hancocks and I sewed in batting to protect the laptop.
I measured it so that the case would fit the laptop snug. I finished it off with buttons and button holes for a closure

Great article and very nice work- my girlfriend created some little custom bags for my digital camera and iPhone. Not only does it look better, but it's much less bulky than those commercially-produced cases. Plus, I saved like $30!
